The Instituto Portugu\u00eas da Qualidade<\/em> (IPQ)<\/a> has recently published the Portuguese versions of the ISO 22300 and ISO 22301 international standards.<\/p>\n

Ozona Consulting has worked with Portuguese companies for years to develop continuity projects at a national and international level. So, we celebrate that the latest versions of these two standards are now available in Portuguese.<\/p>\n

The following paragraphs examine the main aspects of both standards, their review process and their translation into Portuguese and Spanish.<\/p>\n

ISO 22301<\/h2>\n


\nISO 22301 – Security and resilience – Business continuity management systems – Requirements is the most notable international standard in the field of business continuity. According to the ISO Survey 2019<\/a>, ISO 22301 currently occupies the 9th <\/sup>position in the list of the most widespread ISO standards, with 1,693 accredited certificates around the world.<\/p>\n

Regarding its content, as indicated on the ISO website<\/a>, this standard establishes the general requirements necessary to “implement, maintain and improve” a business continuity management system. The function of such a system is to enable the organization to protect itself against disruptive incidents, reduce their likelihood, and respond to them effectively, so as to return to normal levels of activity as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

The second edition of ISO 22301 (ISO 22301:2019) came out in October 2019, replacing the 2012 edition.<\/p>\n

ISO 22300<\/h2>\n


\nISO 22300 – Security and resilience – Vocabulary contains the definitions of the standardized vocabulary used in the Security and Resilience family.<\/p>\n

The current version of this standard is ISO 22300:2018, which superseded the 2012 edition. Although ISO generally stipulates a five-year review of its standards, vocabulary standards do not always follow this cycle. Thus, a new edition of ISO 22300 is scheduled for publication by the end of this year.<\/p>\n

Review and translation of ISO standards<\/h2>\n


\nISO standards are developed and reviewed by the so-called technical committees, made up of experts from each sector. Following their review, standards often undergo translation and homologation processes in each country. In Spain, for example, ISO standards are published by the Asociaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola de Normalizaci\u00f3n <\/em>(UNE)<\/a>. Within UNE, there are also national technical committees, which are the ones responsible for the translation of the standards.<\/p>\n

The UNE committee charged with translating ISO 22300 and ISO 22301 is CTN 196 – Protecci\u00f3n y seguridad de los ciudadanos<\/em>. Whereas in Portugal, it is the Comiss\u00e3o T\u00e9cnica de Normaliza\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em> CT195, within the IPQ, who performs this task.<\/p>\n

So, the new Portuguese versions of these standards are NP EN ISO 22300:2020 – Seguran\u00e7a e resili\u00eancia <\/em>– Vocabul\u00e1rio<\/em> and NP EN ISO 22301:2020 – Seguran\u00e7a e resili\u00eancia <\/em>– Sistemas de gest\u00e3o da continuidade do neg\u00f3cio <\/em>– Requisitos<\/em>, respectively.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the\u00a0 Spanish versions are UNE-EN ISO 22300:2020 – Seguridad y resiliencia<\/em> – Vocabulario<\/em> and UNE-EN ISO 22301:2020 – Seguridad y resiliencia<\/em> – Sistema de gesti\u00f3n de continuidad de negocio<\/em> – Requisitos<\/em>, both published in May 2020.<\/p>\n

The ISO technical committee in charge of reviewing these two standards is ISO\/TC 292. Ux\u00eda Fern\u00e1ndez, Director of Business Continuity and partner at Ozona Consulting, is a member of this committee. In fact, Ux\u00eda is the Project Leader of ISO\/TS 22317, which provides the guidelines for carrying out the BIA<\/a>. This document is currently under review.<\/p>\n
